Portable Power
How Much Power Does a 12V Fridge Use?
Estimate daily energy for a camping fridge without assuming the compressor runs continuously.
Updated September 7, 2026 · 8 min read
A portable fridge may list a 45–60W operating draw, but its compressor cycles. Daily consumption depends on ambient heat, set temperature, insulation, ventilation, contents, and how often the lid opens.
Measure the duty cycle
If a 50W compressor runs 35% of the day, the basic estimate is 50W × 24 hours × 0.35, or 420Wh. Hot vehicles and poor ventilation can push the duty cycle much higher.
Measure instead of guessing
A plug-in DC power meter can log actual energy use over a representative day. Pre-chill food at home, keep the fridge shaded, leave clearance around vents, and avoid using a power station’s AC inverter when a regulated 12V output is available.
Size for the hottest day
Use a higher duty cycle for summer travel and add reserve. Confirm that the power source’s 12V port can deliver the fridge’s startup current and will not automatically shut off under a cycling load.
