How Many Solar Watts Do You Need for Camping?
Estimate panel size using daily energy, real sunlight, and system losses.

A solar panel’s rating is a laboratory maximum, not a promise. The right camping array starts with the energy you need to replace each day and the usable sunlight available where and when you travel.
Calculate daily energy use
Add the watt-hours consumed by refrigeration, lighting, phones, cameras, communication gear, and other loads. If your kit uses 500Wh per day, solar must replace roughly that amount to remain energy-neutral.
Use peak sun hours
Peak sun hours combine a day’s variable sunlight into an equivalent number of full-output hours. Planning with four peak sun hours and a 75% total-system efficiency gives:
Round up to 200W. If shade is unavoidable, weather is uncertain, or the panel will lie flat, add margin rather than assuming nameplate performance.
Portable or fixed?
Portable panels can be repositioned toward the sun while your vehicle or tent remains shaded. Fixed roof panels charge with less effort and may collect energy while driving, but their angle is rarely ideal. The better choice depends on whether you value unattended charging or optimized placement.
Confirm electrical compatibility
Before connecting a panel, check the power station’s solar input voltage range, maximum input current, maximum accepted watts, connector type, and polarity. A panel can fit physically and still be electrically incompatible.
Plan the weakest day
Solar works best as part of a system, not as a daily guarantee. Carry enough stored energy for critical loads through a low-production day. Keep emergency communication and navigation on their own reserve whenever practical.
