Power Banks on Planes: Read the Watt-Hours

Airline battery rules are based primarily on watt-hours, not marketing labels such as “20,000mAh.” Portable power banks generally belong in carry-on baggage, where a damaged battery can be noticed and addressed.

Find the printed Wh rating

Choose a power bank with a clearly legible watt-hour label. If only amp-hours and nominal voltage are shown, multiply them to calculate watt-hours.

Verify the current rule

Limits and approval procedures can change. Check the airline and applicable aviation authority before travel, especially for batteries above the ordinary consumer range. Protect terminals from short circuit and do not travel with a swollen, damaged, or recalled pack.

Match output to the trip

A phone-only traveler may value low weight. Laptop charging requires sufficient USB-C PD output and a properly rated cable. Capacity does not guarantee output compatibility.
