Portable Solar Panels: Series or Parallel?
Understand voltage, current, shade behavior, and input limits before joining panels.

Series wiring adds panel voltage while current stays roughly the same. Parallel wiring adds current while voltage stays roughly the same. The correct layout is the one that remains inside the charge controller’s full input limits.
Why series can help
Higher voltage can reduce cable losses and help a system reach its charging threshold in weaker light. Partial shade on one panel can reduce the performance of the whole series string.
Why parallel can help
Parallel panels can tolerate uneven panel conditions better, but higher current requires suitable connectors, fusing, and cable gauge.
Never match on watts alone
Check open-circuit voltage in cold conditions, operating voltage, short-circuit current, connector polarity, and the power station’s accepted range. Do not exceed an input limit even if the advertised total watts appear acceptable.
